AP Biology
STUDY GUIDE: CH. 16
“THE MOLECULAR BASIS OF INHERITANCE
Key terms:
Transformation DNA ligase
Bacteriophages primer
Phage primase
Double helix helicase
Semiconservative replication single-strand binding protein
Origins of replication mismatch pair
Replication fork nuclease
DNA polymerase nucleotide excision repair
Leading strand telomere
Lagging strand telomerase
Objectives:
- Summarize the experiments performed by the following scientists that provided evidence that DNA is the genetic material: Griffith; Avery; McCarty; MacLeod; Hershey and Chase; Chargaff.
- Explain HOW Watson and Crick deduced the structure of DNA and describe the evidence they used. Explain the significance of the research of Rosalind Franklin.
- Describe the structure of DNA. Explain the “base-pairing rule” and describe its significance.
- Describe the semiconservative model of replication and the significance of the experiments of Meselson and Stahl.
- Describe the process of DNA replication. Note the structure of the many origins of replication and replication forks and explain the role of DNA polymerase.
- Define”antiparallel” and explain why continuous synthesis of both DNA strands is possible.
- Distinguish between the leading and lagging strand.
- Explain how the lagging strand is synthesized even though DNA polymerase can add nucleotides only to the 3’ end.
- Explain the role of DNA ligase, primase, helicase, and the single-strand binding protein.
- Explain the roles of DNA polymerase mismatch repair enzymes, and nuclease in DNA proofreading and repair.
- Describe the structure and function of telomerases. Explain the significance of telomerase to healthy and cancerous cells.
Take it from previous experiences from last years genetics, this unit is not going to be easy especially knowing the fact that this is an AP Bio class. Happy studying...
ReplyDeleteWow! And since when do I just post irrelevant random information up there!
ReplyDeletewhen you want to mess with us... :}
ReplyDeleteOh how it hurts when I see words like "explain" and "describe".
ReplyDeleteThis chapter is so hard!! :(
You guys crack me up :) have fun Dana! And please do not forget to explain and describe
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean Dana =p
ReplyDeletetis not that hard...
ReplyDeletePlease be ready for your assessment, do not let me down!
ReplyDeletehello is anyone there
ReplyDelete@dudewatsthiskrap, dude, what is this crap?
ReplyDeleteI feel like I've been letting too many people down lately.
ReplyDeleteI think I'm one of them Siddiqui :(
ReplyDeleteJust finished the study guide.
ReplyDeleteI'm letting siddiqui up. (not down there though) :|
ReplyDeleteProcrastination!
ReplyDeleteProcrastination...that's my biggest problem!!!
ReplyDeleteMe too!
ReplyDeleteI think that's everyones problem
ReplyDeletethat's what she said.
ReplyDeletegot accepted into two colleges: wayne state and dearborn...
ReplyDeleteNice :)
ReplyDeletewe have a quiz 2mro?
